Each week we will introduce new vocabulary terms and read assigned chapters. The students will also be answering comprehension questions over specific sections. The students are free to bring these books home, but since they are paperback extra care will need to be taken to be sure the books stay in good condition. If books are lost, then the student will have to pay to replace it. Math - In preparation for a Math Unit concerning writing checks, keeping a checkbook record, and reconciling a bank statement, our fifth graders are reviewing how to work with decimals. You and your child can find the decimal concepts we will cover in Chapter 10 of our math book. As always, we encourage the students to take their books home (not classwork or worksheets) in order to share this information with you. The activities connected with the Checkbook Unit are real-life skills that our students can use. Social Studies - The focus of our study will be more current history of our country over the next few chapters. In addition, we are learning the states and capitals of our country. The students will locate each state on a blank map. Correct spelling of the states is required because these states names will be included in our last three Spelling lessons. This will be done by regions of the country. English - We are finishing up our study of adverbs and will be starting to learn about prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Each student will begin writing an autobiography, and we will need your help with supplying information and pictures. Much of this work, but some of these pages will need to be completed at home. Science - We are studying the major systems of the human body. This material is not contained in our textbooks. So, you won't be seeing these books at home. The students are given notes and informational pages to teach the material. When we finish this study, we will begin a study of the plants.

Materials were given to the students on Wednesday and an explanation was given. Please be sure to go over the direction pages with your student. Each question will need to be written on a notecard. Then notes to answer that question will be written on the card also. Using that information, the student will write a paragraph for each notecard that answers the question on the half sheets of paper provided. We will assemble those booklets here at school. They will need to draw a model of homes for their Indian tribe and dress the Indian doll. If they build a model of the home, they will receive extra credit. Use a manila folder to hold the other information. All of this information in included in the directions.

Your child has selected an endangered animal. They are to bring 3 sources about that animal to class by Wednesday. These sources can be internet articles, books, encyclopedias, or magazines. These will be used to gather information about their endangered animal. We will be learning to take notes that the student will use to write a rough draft and then a final report about their animal. Most of this work will be done in class. They will be receiving an English and Science grade on this report.

Bones, Bones, Bones...

We have started "Anatomy Academy" in the 5th grade at PDS. For the next few weeks, we will begin to study some of the different body systems! It should be interesting, and I can't wait for them to learn about their body! First off, we are beginning with the Skeletal System and bones. They will begin by learning the scientific names for some of the different bones.

Also, be looking for a project due Feb. 10. They chose their own project in class on Jan. 28 and should be bringing home information on what they picked! Please be creative on these projects...I can't wait to see what these sharp minds come up with!

Poetry Party
